Nobody enjoys an MOT failure — it’s the cost, the retest and the hassle. The good news is that a lot of common failures are easy to spot (and fix) beforehand. Here’s how to give your BMW Mini or Fiat 500 the best chance of passing first time.
Quick checks you can do at home
- Lights — check every bulb: headlights (main and dipped), indicators, brake lights, reversing and number-plate lights. Blown bulbs are one of the most common (and avoidable) failures.
- Tyres — at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters, no damage, and correct pressures.
- Wipers and washers — wipers must clear the screen properly (no splits), and the washers must work, so top up the fluid.
- Screen — no damage larger than the allowed limits in the driver’s line of sight.
- Number plates — clean, secure and correctly spaced.
- Horn and seatbelts — the horn works and seatbelts latch, retract and aren’t frayed.
- Warning lights — an illuminated airbag, ABS or engine management light can be an MOT failure.
The common failure points on Minis and Fiat 500s
Beyond bulbs and tyres, the failures we see most are suspension wear (drop links, ball joints, springs), worn brakes, and corrosion or leaks — plus warning lights left unattended. Many of these tie back to deferred maintenance, which is why a service before the MOT often pays for itself.
Service first, then MOT
An MOT checks roadworthiness on the day — it isn’t a service and doesn’t guarantee reliability. Having a service (or at least a pre-MOT check) done first means wear items are caught and sorted, so you’re far less likely to fail or pick up advisories. The MOT fee
The MOT test fee is capped by the DVSA — the maximum for a standard car (class 4) is £54.85. If something does need putting right, we’ll explain it clearly and quote before doing any work.

Can I drive my car to the MOT without a valid MOT?
Generally only to a pre-booked test (or to/from repairs for it), and the car must be roadworthy. If in doubt, ask us — or book in and we’ll sort it in one visit.
What’s the difference between an MOT and a service?
An MOT is a legal roadworthiness test on the day; a service is preventative maintenance that keeps the car reliable. They’re separate, but doing both together is convenient and catches more.
