A warning light on the dash is your car telling you something — but it’s not always obvious how urgent it is. Here’s a plain-English guide to the most common BMW Mini and Fiat 500 warning lights, what they mean, and when to act.

A quick rule of thumb on colours

Red means stop safely as soon as you can — it’s a serious or safety warning. Amber/orange means get it checked soon — the car has detected a fault but you can usually drive carefully. Green/blue are informational only.

Common lights and what they mean

  • Engine management light (amber) — a fault somewhere in the engine or emissions system. If it’s flashing, or the car runs badly, treat it as urgent. A diagnostic read pinpoints the exact cause.
  • Oil pressure / oil can (red) — stop as soon as it’s safe and switch off; low oil pressure can quickly destroy an engine.
  • Coolant temperature (red) — overheating; stop, let it cool, and get it checked (see our Mini cooling guide).
  • Battery / charging (red) — the charging system isn’t keeping up; you may lose electrical power, so get it checked promptly.
  • Brake warning (red) — could be low brake fluid, worn pads or a handbrake left on; never ignore a brake warning.
  • ABS / traction control (amber) — a fault in the anti-lock or stability system; the car still brakes, but get it looked at.
  • Tyre pressure (TPMS, amber) — check and adjust your pressures; if it stays on, a sensor or the system may need attention.
  • Glow plug / DPF (diesel) — worth checking soon to avoid bigger emissions-system bills.
